Sandstone cliffs cut into coves along the western Algarve. Overrun in August, close to perfect in May.
Two hundred steps down to a cove split by a rock tunnel. Small, so go early.
Sea stacks and arches at the end of the headland. Best from a boat at 8am.
Out of season, which turns out to be the whole point. Cold water, empty cliffs, half the restaurants shut, and the coast path to Ponta da Piedade entirely to myself on a Tuesday.
Beautiful coast, and I would go back outside of summer. In September it is still a resort town, and the good coves have a queue on the stairs down. The boats out to the arches at sunrise are the whole reason to come.
